"A plague o' both your houses!", Mercutio, Act II scene i

Mercutio's curse as he draws his last breath is an omen of events to come. After the light romantic comic interlude of Act II, Act III is where the important events leading to the ultimate death of the two young lovers take place. Tybalt comes to fight the duel he had challenged Romeo to by letter in the previous act. Romeo, only hours after his clandestine marriage to Juliet, is unwilling to fight Tybalt, saying he loves him "better than thou canst devise". Instead Mercutio, who is angered by Romeo's pacifistic attitude, leaps to the challenge and is eventually dealt a mortal blow by Tybalt. Now Romeo, enraged at his own "effeminate" behaviour for which he blames his love for Juliet, fights with and kills Tybalt, then flees. Prince Escalus arrives at the scene and declares that Romeo should be exiled.
In the meantime, Juliet is waiting impatiently for the night to come so she can be reconciled with Romeo. The nurse rushes in screaming "he's dead" and Juliet thinks for a moment that she is talking about Romeo. Then she learns tht it is her cousin Tybalt who is dead, killed by her husband Romeo. She is momentarily angry, and curses Romeo, "O serpent heart, hid with a flow'ring face! Did ever dragon keep so fair a cave? Beautiful tyrant! Fiend angelical!" However, when the nurse curses him she has a change of heart, "Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name, When I, your three-hours wife have mangled it?" The nurse decides to find Romeo so that the young newly-weds can spend their first and last night together.
Romeo has gone to Friar Laurence, from whom he learns the punishment he will receive. Romeo says he would rather die than live in exile, "'Tis torture, and not mercy: heaven is here, Where Juliet lives; and every cat, and dog, And little mouse, every unworthy thing , Live here in heaven, and may look on her; But Romeo may not".The nurse arrives at Friar Laurence's cell and tells Romeo to come to the Capulet mansion that night.
In the meantime, Capulet and Lady Capulet decide that Juliet should marry Paris soon, in three days time, hoping it will help her to forget her cousin.
The next morning, at dawn, Romeo is about to leave Juliet's chamber, never to see her again, and Juliet pleads with him to stay a little longer, "Wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day: It was the nightingale, and not the lark, That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear". He leaves, and Lady Capulet arrives, bringing news of Juliet's impending marriage. This time, Juliet is not submissive to her parents' wishes and she openly defies them. Capulet is furious, saying that if she does not marry Paris, she will end her days begging and starving on the streets. The nurse thinks she might as well marry Paris, who she always thought the better match, now that Romeo was effectively dead for Juliet. Juliet pretends to agree with her, but after she's gone she curses her behind her back. She states that she will go to the friar for advice, "If all else fail, myself have power to die."
Well, it all happens in this scene!

Until the act III, everything is okay. Two sweethearts get married secretly while they are thinking that this marriage will bring peace and happiness to these two
enemy families. The atmosphere is actually lovely and partly peaceful by the time
the fighting scene that is between Romeo and Tybalt occurs. Suddenly the way of the play changes, and the violent murder of Tybalt makes the spectators/readers to be
shocked even if they are informed about the unhappy ending at the very beginning of the play. In fact, Romeo always is seen as a pacific character and before their figths with Tybalt his this attitude makes his friends to think that Romeo has lost his manhood characteristic.s In those times in England it was widely believed that too much love causes this feminine behaviours. Mercutio gets angry and this anger causes his death; Romeo takes his revenge by killing Tybalt and he cannot believe what he has done with a sudden anger. He says "O, I am fortune's fool!" in order to indicate his being such an unlucky
new-married man who is going to have to seperate from his fresh bride.

ın my opinion Romeo has a character which can get angry easily so, he changes his destiny because of his anger. he kills Tybalt then, Prince Escalus arrives at the scene, declares that Romeo should be exiled. this is a strong punishment in those days when someone kills a man. however, this is a stronger and more difficult punishment for he has just get married with Juliet. he should have thought the end of the events. furthermore, this is a difficult situation for Juliet, as well. she fells in love with Romeo, trusts and marries. the conclusion comes earlier. ıt smells like old Turkish films. that's what ı feel while reading the act. after a while Juliet understands Romeo and forgives. Shakespeare must have wanted to focus on the bigness of Juliet's love. In the meantime, Capulet and Lady Capulet decide that Juliet should marry Paris because they do not learn the reality. this is another tragic part of the act. Lady Capulet says the big event-Juliet's impending marriage. in a conclusion of the act we see the disappointment of the nurse because she thinks that Paris is the most suitable man for Juliet.

Everyting was okay: it was only 3 hours that Romeo and Juliet married, they both were happy but with the death of Benvolio, curse comes to both families,Capulets and Montegues. Actually Romeo did not want to fight because of happiness bringing with their marriage and his cousin surprised when he could not see old Romeo. However, Romeo changed when his cousin was killed by Tybalt. He forgot Juliet and fulled with hate then killed Benvolio. When nurse came to house with the news, Juliet thougt Romeo was died because she could not think anything without Romeo. this is a very tragic scene, I think it is the turning point. The destiny appears in this scene the star-cross fate appears.

I think there is always silence after a big storm, which means there is sadness or unhappiness after being happy for a while. This statements finds its way through the text, starting with the scene 3. We have seen a pure and innocent love between the two lovers, but from now on everything has changed forthe worse. First, Mercutio was killed and then Tybalt. As we know Tybalt is a very aggressive and exuberant and his desire to have a duello with Romeo is very obvious. As a result, Tybalt wants to kill Romeo, but Mercutio wants to fight Tybalt because Romeo does not want to fight Tybalt as he is Juliet's cousin. At the end of the fight, Tybalt kills Mercutio, whick makes Romeo too determined to fight for the revenge of Mercutio. This time Romeo kills Tybalt and everything starts to be more complicated. Mercutio says ""A plague o' both your houses!", and he means that everyone has suffered from the enmity or the fight between the two families and his death is because of their meaningless fight. I hope that our teacher will ask the quotation in the exam because it summmarises the enmity well enough.

This scene stated the fate of the play. It was very very sad scene. Although Romeo and Juliet loved eachother, they were very sad because their love was impossible. Tybalt's death made their love impossible. Firstly, everything was perfect, they married but the fighting scene deteriorated everything. The curse came out with the deaths. I am very sad for Romeo and Juliet. In fact it looks like a Turkish film and I can feel their sadness. It is completely a tragedy. We can guess the end of the play with this scene...

In this scene, we can easily see how Shakespeare reflected the Renaissance influence on his art.I mean that in this scene,Mercutio was dead and this character was immediately gone out of the play as he was stated as contradiction of the atmosphere given in the play. The curse of him informes us that something terrible will happen in the following scene. In addition,we can easily see that how rage emerges suddenly and changes the way of life.Altough everything was good for both lover as they got married and their lovely fancy turned into reality, the sudden anger of Romeo caused Tybalt's death and changed everything.Juliet firstly misunderstood nurse and thought that Romeo was dead. However, she began to hate Romeo when she realized that it was Tybalt who was killed by her husband. The play is getting more dramatic when the Capulet decided that Juliet should marry Paris. Finally, I can say that another definiton of love can be pain when we look at the destiny of Romeo and Juiet.

Everything changes with the start of the act III.Tybalt invites Romeo to fight the duel.As he is newly married to Juliet ,he is unwilling to fight with him.On the other side ,Mercutio can'tbear Romeo's this behaviour and persuade him to fight with Tybalt.Unfortunately ,he will be exiled by the Princess. In my opinion he has to be a bit patient and he should think her wife ,Juliet. Two young lovers' life will change from this moment...Perhaps. they will not see each other again.......

I believe that Romeo has not a mature character because he loses his temper quickly. Even if he does not want to fight with Tybalt, he kills Tybalt when Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, was killed by Tybalt. I am sure that Romeo is a victim of his anger. After killing Tybalt, Prince declares that Romeo should be exiled. When Romeo hears his punishment, he is miserable because being exiled means leaving from Juliet. Romeo’s impatient behavior destroys everything; on the other hand, Juliet learns his cousin was killed by Romeo and she feels very angry. After Nurse curses his husband, her feeling changes suddenly and she starts to worry about Romeo. In my opinion, the most interesting point is two families have a miserable ending. “A plague o’ both your houses!” is the last saying of Mercutio before his died. I am pretty sure that there is a strong connection between Mercution’s damn and a miserable ending of Capulets and Montagues.

I belive that the scene is very bad and very important scene for the love story the scene changed all of the story. they love each other but they cannot reunited with each other. tybalt's death make imposible their love

Mercutio, in his last breathe curses both families, unleashes the curse upon two feuding families, who more foolish than themselves but again themselves. With his short but sharp words, Mercutio in deed expresses his frustration about the enduring hatred which led to nothing but distress between families and in the society.

didem dedi ki...

Mercutio's words will change the lives of both lovers forever. Maybe it is that moment when he casted his evil curse upon both families that the story turned to a new direction where the two lovers will never see one another again, moreover; the fate will play so faulty a trick on them that even if they strive to meet one more time, they shant. The fate will find a way to drain the veins of life of Romeo and Juliet but their love shall remain immortal.

Act III changed the run of events. Tybalt called Romeo for a dual but Romeo did not want it because of his being Juliet’s cousin.Mercutio could not bear Tybalt’s provocations and leapt to the challenge and killed by Tybalt. Romeo annoyed and started to fight with Tybalt and killed him. His crime caused his being exiled from Verona and breaking away from Juliet. Mercutio’s last words give us to understand what will happen at the end. An instantaneous nevre determined their fate.

sebahatözer dedi ki...

There is a happy scene. Romeo and Juliet are married. We think that there will be peace between the families for a short moment. However, a few hours later that happy scene, the atmosphere of the play changes. A fight occurs between Romeo and Tybalt. Romeo does not want to have a fight with him because he is Juliet’ s cousion. And then, Mercutio becomes angry by pacifistic attitude of Romeo and has a challenge with tybalt and is killed by him. Before he dies he says ""A plague o' both your houses!" . he imply that the silly, meaningless fight between two families caused his death curse them. This shows us the future of the play clearly, the fate of the lovers. This event bring unhappiness, separation of lovers forever. The curse turnes out to be correct. Both, Romeo and juliet die at the end.

gülhanozdemirorg dedi ki...

In my opinion act III is the most striking part of the play because until act III everything is all right between Romeo and Juliet. You think that the two families may make peace. However, with Romeo's killing Tybalt makes everything bad.Anyway, the love between Romeo and Juliet is so strong that they can forget everything.

Something should change the way of the story to give an end to story and it should be a bad ending because great lovers never come together and live forever . It is what makes theşr stories interesting and worth to reading for centuries.
So in the end is built on this scene that bad things happen between two families which makes everything worse for Romeo aND Juliet .Mercutio dies and Romeo kilss Tybalt which will beceome a reson to escape but it is a great fact that they will never escape from their fate. This sce
ne is really important because the storm is coming closer..

at first we think that everything is getting better, but then we see two death and we understand that romeo and juliet cannot come together. Shakespeare's effective writing style is seen very closely in that scene. He shows love also as suffering.

this scene is a misleading scene.romeo and juliet has justly maried and everyhing seems good. when Tybalt appears everythings starts to become bad. in fact romeo doesn't wants to fight, then bad things starts to happen.after that we can understand the coming scene.

this situation which Juliet is in is really tragic. she cannot say no to her parents but she loves R. and she doesn t want to be with Paris. that's a really unfair situation. i mean R. loves J. as well but he is only exhiled :) when J. has to fight with everybody and everything. her cousin is dead but she still loves R and she feels guilty about what she think for her 'husband'.
i may sound weird but this is what i think.
i know they will die at the end and i think they also know that they are gonna die :) they would run away and die together instead? i don't know...

what must be shall be!

Mercutio’s death is the turning point in the play. Because of it, the fist day of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet becomes the last day for them to be together. This untimely death causes Romeo to forget everything about Juliet and to kill Tybalt. On the other hand, Juliet proves her true love again because, even if she is angry with Romeo at first due to the death of her cousin, later, she regrets and starts to be sorry about her husband, Romeo. In this act, it seems that they come closer gradually to their inevitable tragic end.

Mercutio curses two families. He doesn't believe in fate , and he blames two families before his death.Actually it is one of the most striking parts of the play. The atmosphere is lovely until the fighting scene.

This is a tragic act. The dream ended. We can see love and violence in this act. The feud between Capulets and Montagues caused the death of Mercutio. Mercutio was killed by Tybalt. Mercutio damned the two families, because of their feud.

Mercutio and Tybalt fight and Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo's arm, then Mercutio dies cursing both the Montagues and the Capulets. The endles feud between two families causes the death of Mercutio. In Romeo and Juliet, there is beauty, love and romance, but violent, chaotic and brutal environment circles the lovers, Romeo and Juliet.

melike dedi ki...

Mercutio is one of the most different characters that Shakespeare introduced to us.He is a good friend though being spiky sometimes.Romeo who wants to keep the peace, tries to settle down both Mercutio and Tybalt. However, the guys who are filled with hatred keep fighting and, alas,Mercutio gets deadly wounded and utter these words. These words show the hatred, revenge and the result of useless fight.Unfortunately, the tragedy shows how the things come true at the end.

meryem arslanaydin dedi ki...

That is the scene where the unlucky events start to appear. Tybalt has challenged Romeo to a duel but Romeo seems unwilling to fight just because of the kinsmen by marriage. Mercutio’ wild character makes everything worse. He says that he will fight Tybalt himself. Romeo tries to stop the duel but he cannot help and Mercutio is killed by Tybalt. The fact that Mercutio’s death leads to the tragic end of the two young passionate lovers. Mercutio seems different from any other character in the play in terms of believing the fate. He knows that the fate is not the responsible for his death but some specific people such as the Capulets and Montegues are. The sentence he utters “a plague o’both your houses” shows that he dies by cursing the enmity between the families. Another important point is also related to Romeo’s character in the scene. From the very beginning of the play, Romeo pictures a character who is not interested in violence , although he lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets. Because we tend to see Romeo as a passionate lover,we are shocked by meeting him as violent character. He kills Tybalt to take the revenge of his friend. The confidential feature of Romeo’s character which is obscured by the power of the love appears here; anger compels him to kill his wife’s cousin in a duel to take the revenge of his friend’s death. The scene is a very clear vision of how infernal things the violence caused by enmity leads.

Fatal violence! Romeo does not fight with Tybalt for Juliet’s sake, but everything changes when Tybalt kills Mercutio. It can be said that Romeo is a victim of his anger, yet I strongly believe that Romeo has right on his side because Mercutio is his best friend, and Romeo loves his friend so much. So Romeo loses his control, and he kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin!
Mercutio dies, cursing both the Montagues and Capulets. It shows that Mercutio is so different from Romeo. He doesn’t curse fate while Romeo blames fate for what has happened to him.

Until the death of Mercutio everything seems to be all right, but bad luck comes to the big lovers after his death. This is the scene in which happiness has gone away and the tragedy starts.

As Romeo has just married Juliet, he doesn't want to fight with Tybalt because he is Juliet's cousin. However, when Tybalt kills Mercutio, which is the turning point in the story because everything was going on well, Romeo can not control his anger and he also kills Tybalt. After hearing this evet, Juliet also becomes anger with Romeo, but her love is so great that she can not be enemy with him. She doesn't want to marry Paris because this idea also seems like a death to her.
