What's in a name! that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet" Juliet, "Romeo and Juliet" Act II, scene ii

Act II is full of high spirits and promise as the two young lovers defy their families and the ancient animosity between them in order to marry. However, this merriment is not to last long, and we get a hint of what is to come when we learn that Tybalt has sent Romeo a letter inviting him to a challenge in revenge for his gatecrashing of the Capulets' ball...

The Act again opens with a Prologue wherein the chorus reiterates what has ocurred.
Scene 1,The party ended, leaving Romeo outside the Capulet house, gazing up in lovesick rapture at Juliet's window.
Scene 2 makes us aware of the enemity between the two families,as Juliet warns Romeo that he could be killed even if anyone sees him there.
Scene three Romeo explains what he feels for Juliet to the Friar and persuades him to help their marriage.
Scene 4,The following morning, Mercutio and Benvolio are searching for Romeo; Tybalt had sent out a challenge for him to fight. But when the pair finally meet up with their enamored young kinsman, he is in no mood for fighting.

At this point Juliet's nurse comes on the scene and takes Romeo aside to demand his intentions. Romeo assures her that his love is in earnest and bids her to bring Juliet to the Friar's cell, where they would be married that afternoon.
Scene 5,Juliet is waiting in the garden to hear what the Nurse has to say about Romeo. She finally arrives and tells Juliet that Romeo has arranged with Friar Lawrence to perform the marriage
Scene 6,While Romeo awaits Juliet's arrival, the Friar tells Romeo not to act too hasitly. Romeo is too happy to take any heed of the warning and the Friar performs the marriage ceremony.

As we see,in first scene, two lovers are isolated from everyone to consoliadate their love. The action starts to rise greatly at the balcony scene where each profess their love for each other. They decide to get married and plan it out.
To me,Shakespeare shows why he is adored by eveyrone by making one of his best imagery to describe Juliet by using light imagery.

with this quotation, I agree with Juliet because there is no importance of the name. She says either you or me can deny our family if they will be trouble for us. Her saying is very sweet, as I understood, she says can a rose becomes bad even if it is called as sth bad?
I liked it :D

If someone is a respective person enough, it is known by everybody in the society and there will be many people that will support him. Therefore, I completely agree with Juliet about the rose matter. It is not important how we call the rose if it is a true rose, it will smell nice and impressive. In my opinion, Shakespeare must have wanted to get the attention of the audience by the words of Juliet because they are marvelous.

Juliet knows nothing about R. and she just says she would love him even if his name would be something else. she doesn't care anythint but him. they are really brave enough as they get married confidentially. they did everything for their true love...

Shakespeare wrote these marvellous scene to impress the audience and I strongly believe that he managed it.We can see the huge love between Romeo and Juliet in this scene. They love each other despite of their parents' animosity. They are able to defy their parents because of their love and the most important thing in this scene is the love of Juliet. She says that the name of rose is not important, it can be another name. The thing that is important is rose and she believes that her love looks like a rose. What a big loveeee.. Impressive.

In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet is the play of contradictions!
Such a big love in such a big hatred is the biggest example of it.

When Romeo wrote a silly poem before falling in love Juliet,
he wanted to emphasize this sharp contradictions to us. (cold fire,
sick health..)For example, the prince prohibited the fight to two families, and the victim of this decision is going to be poor Romeo who hates hatred and loves peace and love.
I think, Shakespeare used
these antonym symbols in order to make them more efficient. For
example we can distinguish the white colour best when we compare it with black. By choosing two enemy families, the writer wanted to show how big their love is ; also by choosing Romeo as a victim (the one starts fight),he want to emphasize how bad fate he has.

Act II is the happiest and least tragic act in the play,I suppose. It starts with a sonnet again and continues with the most beautiful and poetric scene in the play-the balcony scene. After having left the ball,Romeo decides that he cannot leave without seeing Juliet again,so decides to find her. This overpowering desire to find Juliet leads him to her and he gets into the Capulet’s orchard and climbs to the wall facing the balcony where Juliet stands.Romeo compares Juliet to the sun and we can see also plenty of wonderful expressions in this dialogue. Here Juliet questions why Romeo must be her enemy. She refuses to believe that Romeo is defined by being a Montague. Juliet admits she feels as strongly about Romeo as he professes he loves her, but she worries that perhaps Romeo will prove inconstant or false, or will think Juliet too easily won. Romeo begins to swear to her, but she stops him, concerned that everything is happening too quickly. He reassures her, and the two confess their love again. In act II, we are also with Friar Lawrence who is going to play an important role in the lovers’ tragic ending. The Friar fears that Romeo may have slept in sin with Rosaline. Romeo assures him that did not happen, and describes his new love for Juliet, his intent to marry her, and his desire that the friar consent to marry them that very day. Friar Lawrence is shocked at this sudden shift from Rosaline to Juliet but agrees to marry the couple. Furthermore, Tybalt sents a letter to Romeo challenging him to a duel. What it is going to be next regarding the duel with Romeo and Tybalt seals the fate of our lovers-Romeo and Juliet.

Capulets and Montagues are two enemy families.Their enemity and names prevent them being two lovers. However, their names are not important for them.Even Romeo had a different name, anything would never change for Juliet; their love would be the same.

merveb dedi ki...

It is not really important Romeo’s identity for Juliet. Because of their big love, they don’t care about anything and anybody. I am sure that Romeo and Juliet love each other very much because Juliet do not pay attention to the name. Although Juliet knows their families have an ancient feud, she does not give up loving Romeo. I believe that this quotation has a great influence on the reader. I think the most important point is whereas Juliet used to obey the authority of her family, she now defies authority. In my opinion, her decision to marry Romeo is a crucial factor to defy her parents.

one of the most famous love stories ,romeo and juliet, prove that why their love is so big wirh their words ,I think .They love each otherwithout thinking about their family's being enemy.
this quatation is quite apprpriate for the love ı think because it is them who love each other not their names. No matter what may their name be they will be the great lovers

Although Romeo and Juliet's families are enemies Juliet doesn't see that as a hindrance for their love. She says the important thing is the love not the name. This shows us that their love is true love because they get marry without hesitation.

The name of Romeo is not important for Juliet. When he gives up using this family name, he will be the same person who Juliet falls in love. This name should not be an obstacle for their love because it does not add anything to his personality, that is, when it is abandoned, Romeo will not lose anything from it. Juliet makes a comparison between Romeo and a rose to show this fact. She thinks that if you give another name to the rose, it still be the rose which has the same sweet smell. Also, Juliet shows her intense devotion to Romeo because if he refuses his family name, she says that she will refuse hers too.

didem dedi ki...

We see this sentence while Juliet was deeply and love and talking to herself. If we call rose something else apple it still has the same smell and same colour.
So a name is nothing. Whether he is a montegue or Copulet it does not matter. He is still Romeo so Juliet loves him as he does.
They fall in love at first sight and they are planning to get marry. Friar helps them to get marry. However we all know that this marriage will not finish the feud between the families.

ın this scene, we saw Juliet's love and her change after this love. She was obedient, but her love was so deep that she neglected the family of Romeo and she emphasized the strentgth of her love. She wanted to focus on emotions not families.

By looking at Juliet's this word , we can see the big love between two young lovers. It does not matter for Juliet who Romeo is.Although they are the children of two enemy families, they don't give up loving each other.Juliet is only deals with her love to him. Also we can see immediate changes in Juliet.Although she is very obedient to her family, she changes very much with the love of Romeo

Juliet doesn’t care that Romeo is a Montague because she wishes Romeo to give his true love to her. Juliet says that if he would simply swear that he loved her, she would refuse her Capulet name. As it’s understood, Juliet has a mature love. It’s not essential for her to have the names of Capulet or Montague, but she strongly believes it’s crucial that their name be called as “ Romeo and Juliet”.

Though the enmity of their families, R & J do not care about this fact. When we read this quote of Juliet, it is easily understood that she doesn’t think of Romeo’s name. She states that changing the name of a rose cannot change the smell of it,so the feud between their families cannot be an obstacle for their big love…

rabis dedi ki...

A big love and big enmity emerge in the Romeo and Juliet. We get the idea that names carry hatred and make love full of pain altough it is so pure.Juliet's words show us that love is something that you can devote everything for it without thinking.Neither name nor fame doesn't seem so important if you love someone deeply. That is,love doesn't mean that you fall in love with a person because of his or her name but thanks to the blessed spirit of lovers and in my opinion, this quotation reflects the blessing mood of real love.

Juliet is such a lover that she does not care who Romeo is. Nothing can stop them loving each other even if they are the children of two enemy families. Her love changes her so much that Juliet starts to defies the authority of her family. In the quotation, Juliet shows her real love with her sentences emphasizing that it is not the name of rose that shows its beauty but itself and not the name of Romeo defines her love but himself.

juliet love romeo very much so, she doesn't care what his name is. Nothing can stop them loving each other even if they have enemy families. In the quotation, Juliet shows her real love and she doesn't care names.

This quotation by Juliet clearly and apperantly unleashes us the fact that both lovers do believe in the existence of love and they believe in the fact that love is above all, neither the name and dignity of wealthy families nor the suppression by the conservative society of that time has the ultimate power to control the destiny that love has predetermined for Romeo and Juliet.

sebahatözer dedi ki...

They have such a big love that they do not care, worry about the enemity between their families. No matter what their names are. Names do not change their personalities or other things. Juliet makes a comparison between Romeo and a rose to show this fact. She shows that if you call a rose with a different name other than rose, it still be the rose which will have the same sweet smell again. I think it is an exellent expression that shows the greatness of her love.

in act 2 l agree with juliet , because people don't love other's name. if they love that is not a real love. She thinks of Romeo in individual terms, and thus her love for him overrides her family’s hatred for the Montague name.

Juliet does not care the enemity between the two families. She loves Romeo as he is Romeo. That he is Montague does not make any sense for her.Their love is true love, and it can't be understood too easily.

Juliet states that she loves Romeo because he is Romeo. She does not care that he is a Montague. For Juliet, she follows her love whatever the other people think. It can be seen that there is a big and real love between Romeo and Juliet. She does not bother the names of Capulets and Montagues. I hope that everybody should live as a real love.:)

In this quotation, Juliet says that If we call rose with another name, it would still smell good and it would still be a beautiful flower. And Juliet adds If Romeo is not called Romeo or Montague, she would love him again. Juliet thinks that her love with Romeo overpowers the two families'feud. Juliet also thinks that name is not important If there is love.

YONCA dedi ki...

In act II, Juliet talks like Shakespeare himself by critically thinking over why people judge some people because of their names and identities. There is no sense in such thoughts, they are non-sense, according to Juliet. In addition,Juliet here is very humanistic in the sense that she is talking in the name of Shakespeare. There is nothing more powerful than love itself because love is blind, thus you may love someone whom you have never thought of before. Therefore, we should not make prejudgements, this s what I conclude from Juliet's words. Also, differences are not a sign of humiliation, and the feud between the two families are quite silly.
If we happen to change Romeo's name, Would not Juliet have loved him again?

gamzeuzun dedi ki...

Juliet doesn't care anything. for her romeo can be a montague but there is no importance of a
name.she thinks she would love romeo whatever his name is.because she believes he is the right person for her.there is a big love between them.this love makes
them think positive and they believe the enmity will end,
their love will end this enmity.

One of the major themes of the play is the tension between social and family identity. According to Juliet, the love comes from one’s inner identity and the enmity between families stems from any outer identity which is based on the family names. Here, she thinks why Romeo must be her enemy. She seems to refuse the social effect of the families on their passionate love. She implies that that she loves Romeo because he is Romeo. She says if Romeo is not called Romeo or Montegue he would be still the same person she loves passionately What is important here is Romeo himself not the name coming from the family or social identitiy. Shekspeare made a very effective similarity by using the word rose; rose smells very sweet but what makes it smell sweet is not the name of it, any other name we call for a rose doesn’t change its sweet smell. The scene shows how strong the love between Romeo and Juliet is. They even have the courage to defy their families because of their passionate love. The last word to say that their love is impressive and something like a dream which is impossible to real in those days. I do not think that there are such people who are courageous enough to prefer love to the family in a time everything is determined by the social identities of the people living.

in this qoutation we understand that to be a Capulet is not an important thing for her. According to Juliet, the love comes from one’s inner identity and the enmity between families stems from any outer identity which is based on the family names. she does not want to be Capulet. she only want to be with Romeo, with her only love. she doesnot think either her family or her statue.

In this quotation, Juliet says that ıf Romeo is not called Romeo or montague, she loves him again. She does not care the brawl, the fight between their families. She loves Romeo because he is only Romeo. His being a member of the Montegues does not interest her. Their love is true love not limited to the names only.

Juliet doesn't give importance to name, which means that even Romeo's family is an enemy of hers, she believes that she can still love romeo. Their love is so passionate that they defy their families.
